Coyotes - Reproduction and Life History

Coyotes are monogamous animals. They form pairs for a few years, yet do not always do so for a lifetime. Courtship continues for about 2-3 months. A Coyote female may mate with more than one partner. A female is in heat for 2 to 5 days. Mating occurs from February through March. Mating seasons may differ from one area to another.

The gestation period is about 60 to 63 days. A female gives birth to 1 to 19 pups. The average litter size is about 6 pups. The pups are born blind. By the age of 10 days, their eyes open and the ears start to be erect. Coyotes rear the young in a den. A hole in rocks or a base of a hollow tree is usually chosen as a den. Sometimes, females take care to prepare an additional den in the case of danger.

At the age of 35 days, the pups are usually weaned. A male usually brings prey and leaves it at the entrance of the den. The parents feed their offspring regurgitated food. The pups grow rapidly and by the age of three weeks they start to play first inside the den and then, outside.

Male Coyotes leave the parents at the age of 6-9 months. Females usually stay with the parents and form the basis of the pack. A one year old Coyote achieves adult size. Approximately at this time, Coyotes reach sexual maturity. Coyotes live for about 15 years.
