Relationships of humans and Coyotes have never been cloudless. Since the time of the first European settlements, humans tried to eradicate this wild canine. The Coyote often preyed on livestock and posed a serious threat to farmers. It remains a mystery how the Coyote has survived all the managing means that humans used to protect cattle. Individuals tried to shoot Coyotes and trap them. However, these attempts turned out to be of little success.

Starting from the 20th century, farmers realized the futility of managing the Coyote separately. Collective Coyote management seemed to be the only way out. Governments started to launch expensive programs aimed at Coyote elimination. Poisoning the carcasses of dead livestock was one of the means employed in these programs. Farmers also made use of traps and fences.

A rapid expansion of the Coyote and a high adaptability of the species slowed down the process of managing the predator. Nowadays, the population of Coyotes remains significant. People are seeking ways to solve the problem and guard livestock from this wild predator.

However, humans do realize the importance of this animal for the ecosystem. Coyotes are an essential link in the food chain of the ecosystem. They exterminate pests and rodents, which is beneficial for agriculture. Coyotes also have other economic values for humans. Their fur is used in coat and pelt' production.

Coyotes - Conservation

Due to their economic value, Coyotes are protected in some areas. The species does not have a special conservation status. Despite their growing populations, Coyotes do face a number of threats in the wild. Humans are the number one enemy for the species. It also suffers from traffic and diseases. Natural predators such as the wolf, bear, mountain lion, and eagle also hunt coyotes.
